His fish cooked. He served her some cold rice and vegetables but she didnât touch them. He poured her the last glass of wine and she sipped at it but didnât finish it. He ate in silence next to her.
He asked her if she was ready to tell him about what happened at Mirror and she said not really. He looked at her slack face, her red eyes and said, âYouâre totally gazooed.â
âYup,â she said, and put her head back on the table. âDid you get a movie?â
âOh. Shit, no, I forgot.â
âGreat.â
âHey,â he said, âsorry. I went shopping for supper for two hours and I forgot the movie.â
âForget it. I should just go to sleep.â
âOkay. Whatever.â
She stood up and shuffled into the bedroom. He cleared the dishes and scraped the oily fish bits into a plastic bag, which he put under the sink. He was supposed to have some sort of recycling tub for the green box but he had never got one. He hoped he remembered the fish bag the next day. The apartment was smoky with fish oil and smoke. It was not unpleasant. It was a bit sexy. There was no sound at all from the bedroom. He imagined her sprawled on his bed and went to wash his hands.
There was no light in the bedroom. He stood in the door for a minute to let his eyes adjust. She was on her side, curled up, almost fetal. She hadnât even taken her cap off. He sat beside her and rubbed her shoulder. She didnât respond. âHey,â he said. She muttered a little. He pushed her onto her back and she moaned. Her eyes were screwed shut and she swatted vaguely at her face as if it was itchy. âHey,â he said. âYouâre fast asleep.â
âYeah,â she sighed, without opening her eyes.
He switched on the lamp beside the bed and she said, âHuh.â
He took off her ball cap and stroked her hair. He looked at her twisted body. Her baggy pants were low on her hips and her hip-bones jutted. The green and blue dragonfly was curved inwards, in the convexity of her groin, in the shadow of the bone. An edge of white thong. He caressed her belly and bum a bit but she didnât stir. In fact, her eyes twitched as if she was irritated.
âAll right,â he said, standing up. He pulled off her running shoes. Her little white socks were dirty. He peeled them off too, and kissed her painted toes. He got her to sit up which she did docilely and he unbuttoned her shirt and pulled it off. She had a plain white cotton bra underneath, some kind of sports bra. It was beautiful. He pulled it off her and could look at her breasts with their sleepy soft pink points for only a minute before she sank back. He unbuttoned her trousers and pulled them off. She pulled her knees up and grabbed at the cover, stuffing herself into the bed. âOkay,â he said.
